The negative impact of flies is well
documented in scientific studies. The two major areas of
concern in livestock and pets are stress caused by a
high concentration of flies annoying the animals and the
transmission of serious diseases.
The nuisance factor caused by flies is
very easy to see and understand. Several species of
flies feed on blood and high numbers of biting flies
cause distress in animals. Non- biting flies are
attracted by secretions from the animals and can be
observed around the eyes and noses of the livestock.
Horse owners use fly masks during the summer to keep
flies away from the animal’s eyes.
The concentration of flies can be very
high in areas where young animals are being raised.
Young mammals are raised on mother’s milk and produce
very nutrient rich manure that is very high in moisture
content. Young poultry also are fed a very rich diet to
encourage growth and their manure is also very high in
nutrients and moisture. This medium is perfect for the
reproduction of flies and the fly problem can be even
more severe if the young are raised in heated
enclosures.
It is not difficult to understand that
stressed animals will not be as productive as
not-stressed animals. Numerous studies have confirmed
this fact and conclude that meat, milk and egg
production of stress animals is significantly reduced
and estimate farm productivity is 2-5% higher where fly
inducted stress is absent. Flies are responsible for
significant reductions in the production of farmed meat
and dairy products. It's estimated that flies are
responsible for global livestock and poultry production
losses measured in the billions of dollars.
The economic significance of disease
transmission is much greater and easier to comprehend.
Biting flies transmit blood-borne diseases from one
infected animal to another. Non-biting flies carry
bacteria and viruses from animal to animal. This
transmission within highly concentrated livestock can be
rapid and devastating. Also of concern is the
transmission of disease to humans and some reports state
that flies are responsible for the transmission of over
50 diseases serious to humans.
